Author Biographies

Margo Hammond, who lives on the East Coast, and Ellen Heltzel, who lives on the West Coast, met in the middle of the country, at a Chicago book festival. Ellen was the book editor at the Oregonian. Margo Hammond was the book editor for the St. Petersburg Times. When they returned home to Portland and St. Petersburg, they continued their lively conversations about reading and publishing by telephone and email. Veteran journalists, they soon decided to invite the public to eavesdrop in on their exchanges, launching the Book Babes blog.
As the Book Babes, they wrote a weekly column about the publishing world at The Book Standard and a monthly column of book recommendations at Good Housekeeping. They served as National Book Critics Circle board members (Ellen served as secretary for the prestigious national group while Margo served as president of the regional Southern Book Critics Circle). They hosted a monthly radio program on WMNF-FM in Tampa and co-wrote articles for numerous national magazines and newspapers on such topics as why literature matters, how to run a book club and the philosophy of book coverage at the New York Times. Their own book, Between the Covers: The Book Babes’ Guide to a Woman’s Reading Pleasures (Da Capo Press), featuring over 500 book reviews and essays on reading, received favorable nods from MORE magazine, Elle and U.S.A. Today.

Margo and Ellen have written book reviews and book commentary for the Washington Post, The Chicago Tribune, The Seattle Times, the Cleveland Plain Dealer, MORE, HuffPost.com, the Pittsburgh Post Gazette and the Milwaukee Journal. Ellen is a frequent book commentator on AM Northwest in Portland and is at work on an historical novel. Margo holds “Down the Rabbit Hole” memoir writing workshops at a tea room in St. Petersburg and is at work on a nonfiction book about late-in-life creativity.
