Author Biography
Poet Brenda Cárdenas, a Wisconsin native, is known for her writing that plays with language and brings forward unusual connections. She often writes in a mixture of Spanish and English and has explained she looks for "the interconnectedness and juxtapositions of difference and similarity between seemingly disparate peoples, events, places, and experiences." Her collections of poetry include From the Tongues of Brick and Stone (2005) and Boomerang (2009). Her work has also appeared in journals and anthologies, including The Wind Shifts: New Latino Poetry (2007) and Brute Neighbors: Urban Nature Poetry, Prose and Photography (2011). Cárdenas was chosen Milwaukee Poet Laureate for 2010-2012.
Cárdenas received her Master's of Fine Arts from the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor in 1995. She is currently a professor of English at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.

Your mission, should you choose to accept it: abandon nights, weekends, and a low odometer reading; prepare a face to meet a room filled with 200 or 20 or 2 faces; make less than minimum wage (if you’re lucky); promote poetry (not always yours) at every turn. This is the work week of a city or state Poet Laureate. Despite a description that sounds like a feature on “Dirty Jobs,” Wisconsin has been blessed with some of its finest poets volunteering for the cause. In this presentation, join current Poets Laureate representing Madison, Milwaukee and the state of Wisconsin as they share their poetry and a bit more of their mission as the appointed ambassadors of poetry.
