Jacqueline West is the author of the middle-grade fantasy series The Books of Elsewhere. Since publication of Volume One: The Shadows in 2010, the series has been on the New York Times' Best Sellers list, has been a Junior Library Guild selection, has garnered starred reviews, has received a CYBILS Award, and has earned several state award nominations. The Books of Elsewhere are scheduled for publication in Italy, Spain, Greece, Turkey, Sweden, France, Russia, and several other countries.
West says she didn't make a point out of focusing on the middle-grade audience for her books. "I never sat down and decided, 'I'm going to write something for kids!' I just had an idea--or a tangled ball of ideas, really--that I knew belonged to a book for young readers. And when I started putting the story on paper, I felt a sort of click. It was thrilling and comfortable at the same time, like when you've tried every key on a ring and you finally find the one that fits the lock."
West is a former English teacher, voracious reader, and occasional musician. She currently lives in Red Wing, Minnesota, surrounded by large piles of books and small piles of dog hair.
