2015 Book Festival Author
John Ferak

While John Ferak was an investigative journalist for the Omaha World-Herald, he covered the story of a gruesome murder in rural Murdock, Nebraska, the search for the killers, and the resulting trial. His book Bloody Lies: a CSI Scandal in the Heartland recounts these events and the surprising twists the case took.

Ferak's book festival presentation will include high quality photos taken at the farmhouse where the murders occurred. “My presentation also includes video from the interrogations of various murder suspects and defendants. The crimes were really committed by a pair of Wisconsin teenagers who were traveling in a stolen truck bearing Wisconsin plates. None of the photos in my presentation show the actual dead bodies; however, we did publish three such black and white photos in the book," he explains.

"My presentation includes a step-by-step overview and analysis of the Nebraska murder case, how the local cops rushed to judgment and arrested two Nebraska cousins. However, the case undergoes a dramatic transformation when it is discovered that a ring bought in Wisconsin was unintentionally dropped in the Nebraska farmhouse as the Wisconsin killers fled. This realization led to their eventual apprehension. Even then, a giant question remained and that nagging question led to the incredible downfall of Nebraska's most famous CSI director, David Kofoed.”

Ferak notes that curiosity and persistence helped him when writing the book. "[The] Nebraska authorities were hoping that nobody in the press or community at large would ask questions or poke around regarding the sloppiness and carelessness that went into the original double murder investigation headed by the Cass County Sheriff's Office and the Nebraska State Patrol."

Ferak has gone on to write Dixie's Last Stand: Was it Murder or Self-Defense? which is another true-crime book. He currently works as an award-winning investigative team editor for Gannett Wisconsin Media, based at The Post-Crescent in Appleton. Ferak has appeared on Investigation Discovery's Cold Blood and on HLN News.
