Rachael Hanel's nonfiction book, We’ll Be the Last Ones to Let You Down: Memoir of a Gravedigger’s Daughter, was published in 2013 by the University of Minnesota Press. Her story and the quality of her writing have been widely praised by reviewers.

We'll Be the Last Ones to Let You Down was a Minnesota Book Award finalist in 2014.
Her essays have appeared in print and online in publications such as the anthology Love and Profanity: A Collection of True, Tortured, Wild, Hilarious, Concise and Intense Tales of Teenage Life, The Bellingham Review and New Delta Review. One essay appeared as a “Notable Essay” in the 2012 edition of Best American Essays, and another one was nominated for a Pushcart Prize.
Hanel has written more than 20 nonfiction books for children. We’ll Be the Last Ones to Let You Down is her first adult nonfiction book.
She teaches mass media at Minnesota State University, Mankato, and lives and writes just outside of town.
