Junny’s Marie: My Forty Year Journey from Inception to Publication

October 13, 2017 @ 8:00 am - 9:00 am CDT

The forty year journey to write Junny’s Marie began with its inception in 1975. My mother wanted me to tell her story. Junny, the Dutch vernacular for Johnny, was my dad. Marie was my mother, Junny’s Marie. Her intriguing stories and memories of two generations in Little Chute, Wisconsin had been told over the years and she began writing notes.

I lived in Alaska and visited yearly, spending hours at the library as well as with friends and relatives, gathering and verifying information on my mother’s recollection of her past.

My grandmother, Francis, immigrated from Holland in 1908 with her first husband and young son. Thus began the saga of strong women forging through the hard times of the early twentieth century. Surviving the Great Depression and beyond had me in awe of people’s tenacity of that time. I was hooked.

Just as determined as her mother, Marie endured much loss, tragedy, and heartache but nothing compared to the brutal murder of her beloved sister.

Through it all, Marie managed to pursue her love of music. Self-taught, she played four instruments and loved to entertain. She kept her sense of humor and adventurous spirit despite the cards she was dealt.
