Sagashus T. Levingston

Sagashus T. Levingston was born in Chicago and raised in the area now known as Bronzeville, but known before gentrification as the Low End. She holds a bachelor’s in English Literature from the University of Illinois at Chicago and has been attending graduate school at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. There she earned a master’s in Afro-American Studies and is currently a PhD Candidate in the Department of English. Her dissertation is titled Infamous Mothers: Bad Moms Doing Extraordinary Things. While her research focuses primarily on literature, it is informed by theory and criticism from rhetoric, motherhood studies and black feminism. Her coffee table book, simply titled Infamous Mothers, is inspired by this work and so is Infamous Mothers, LLC, a social enterprise where Sagashus offers personal and professional development training meant to empower women who mother from the margins of our society. She also delivers programming to the organizations and professionals that make an impact on these women's lives. Sagashus is a proud button-wearing member of the Doyenne Group, Inc. located in Madison, WI. She also sits on the WWBIC South Central Ambassadorial Advisory Committee. As the proud mother of six children—three boys and three girls, and partner of Tosumba, she and her family lives in Madison, WI.

1.) 2021 Fox Cities Reads “Your Authentic Self” Poetry Contest

Opens: January 4, 2021 Ends: January 18, 2021

To celebrate Your Authentic Self, FCBF will host a community-wide poetry contest in the weeks ahead of the Reads announcement!

There are three categories: Adult, Teen, and Youth. The first place winner of each category will receive a $50 cash prize and will be invited to read their poetry at the virtual launch on January 26. Poems should speak to the theme, Your Authentic Self. Local poets will judge the poems in each category. We will share more about our judges in a coming blog post. Poetry entries should be submitted via Google Forms by January 18, 2021. Link in bio to get to the submission form!

2.) 2021 Fox Cities Reads Poetry Workshop

January 12, 2021, 6:30 – 7:30 PM CST

The workshop will be held Tuesday, January 12, 6:30-7:30 PM and is designed to welcome first-time writers, self-declared non-writers, and poets who have been writing for years. Participants will have the opportunity to explore four different types of poetry and have the opportunity to submit one poem for feedback post-workshop. Meet Christopher “Tuffer” Kunz! Our 2020 Fox C Meet Christopher “Tuffer” Kunz! Our 2020 Fox Cities Book Festival is dedicated in his honor. Christopher was a gifted writer and his personal essays analyze our short existence and the search for the meaning of life. He believed every story should have a happy ending and wrote stories of hope and wonder, if a bit twisted. When both of his parents died too young, Christopher decided to spend his time doing the things he loves. Not only did Christopher write four novels but he served the community! Janie Chang writes historical fiction with a personal connection, drawing from a family history with 36 generations of recorded genealogy. She grew up listening to stories about life in a small Chinese town in the years before the Second World War and tales of ancestors who encountered dragons, ghosts, and immortals. LIBRARY OF LEGENDS is her third book and is a Globe and Mail national bestseller! 🙌 Janie is a proud member of the @tallpoppywriters. She is also the founder and main organizer of Canadian Authors for Indies, which is a national day of support by authors for independent bookstores, which ran from 2015-2017; this event is now run as Canadian Independent Bookstore by the Regail Cluncil of Canada!
