All you have to do is look around to see that contemporary dark fiction is dominating print, online media, television, and film. Whether it’s the success of film studios like A24 Films and tv shows like The Walking Dead, or the emergence of small presses and magazines publishing fantasy, science fiction, horror, and magical realism, there is a demand for creative work that challenges, stimulates, scares, and teaches. Why do readers like to read thrillers? Why do people like to be scared? And how can you navigate these waters and find your own place, whether you write about taboo subject matter, classic fantasies, space operas, psychological thriller, or horror stories? In the past ten years I’ve used everything from my love of Stephen King to my Masters of Fine Arts degree (MFA) to the current crop of “best of the year” anthologies to find inspiration, markets, and “my people.” If you take the time to study these markets, you can find a home for your work. And in doing so, develop your own voice, and find ways to tell unique stories, in ways that the public hasn’t seen before, while tapping into familiar themes, classic plots, and accessible narratives.
