From NaNoWriMo to Award Banquets: How I Wrote My Novel

October 13, 2020 @ 10:30 am - 11:30 am CDT

Sarah Read’s debut novel The Bone Weaver’s Orchard was released in early 2019, followed by her debut short story collection Out of Water. Both books were nominated for three different literary awards, and her novel went on to win two of them: The Bram Stoker Award for Superior Achievement in a First Novel, and the This is Horror Award for Novel of the Year. When she first started writing that book on November 1st of 2013, determined to earn her NaNoWriMo badge, she wasn’t sure anyone would ever read it. Sarah will talk about how she took that early rough draft and crafted it into a successful novel. She’ll discuss the editing process, her search for an agent and publisher, book promotion, networking, and how to manage a sudden career in writing. Mistakes were made, lessons were learned, new lessons keep arising–and (nearly) all of it has been fun.
