Putting Action Into Words: The Poetry of Fair Housing

October 8, 2019 @ 1:30 pm - 2:30 pm CDT

Current Wisconsin Poet Laureate, Margaret Rozga believes in poetry’s power to open doors to new insights into social justice issues.  In reading poems from 200 Nights and One Day, her book about Milwaukee’s struggle for fair housing, she brings to life again her experiences marching in Milwaukee for fair housing legislation. In this presentation, she’ll also discuss recent fair housing policy and poetry successes during the 50th anniversary of those historic fair housing marches. Her workshops with high school students show young people are inspired by this history to create their own poems and to take action on their issues. The presentation includes opportunities for audience participation and time for questions and discussion.
