SUMMARY:Indian Mounds of Wisconsin
DESCRIPTION:More mounds were built by ancient Native Americans in Wisconsin than in any other region of North America—between 15\,000 and 20\,000\, at least 4\,000 of which remain today. Most impressive are the effigy mounds\, huge earthworks sculpted in the shapes of thunderbirds\, water panthers\, and other forms\, not found anywhere else in the world in such concentrations. This second edition is updated throughout\, incorporating exciting new research and satellite imagery. Written for general readers\, it offers a comprehensive overview of these intriguing earthworks.

SUMMARY:How a 21st Century Indian Became Published
DESCRIPTION:Louis V. Clark III will take you on a journey through the ups and downs of reservation life\, pointing out the highlights and the low-lights of high school\, marriage\, parenthood\, college and the pursuit of a dream. He will reveal the hidden truths of racism and bigotry that are just accepted in day to day living but have to be shouldered and overcome to have a full life. He will show you how walking just one step out of time forced him to leave his dreams as he searched for truth and the purity of the written word. He will show you how being true to himself\, true to those he loves has allowed him to catch a falling star and dance among the rainbows that God has allowed into his life. He will show you\, How to be an Indian in the 21st Century.

SUMMARY:Separating Fact From Fiction
DESCRIPTION:When we think of some of our favorite books\, for one reason or another the stories resonate and stick with us. Why is that? For example\, in his novel “The DaVinci Code”\, Dan Brown presents a series of facts supporting the theory that the Holy Grail was not a chalice\, but was in fact Mary Magdalene. How much is fact\, and how much is fiction? \nJ. D. will discuss some of the facts that his books “Pearl Lake” and “The Runestone Quest” were based on\, and talk about how the stories evolved from there.

SUMMARY:Mel Miskimen reads excerpts from her memoir: Sit Stay Heal
DESCRIPTION:My parents had known each other since they were 12 and when my mother unexpectedly died\, my father was lost. He needed a project. \nEnter my 7 year old underachieving labrador\, Seamus. \nDad was a hunter. An expert when it came to training retrievers to fetch felled fowl. My dog\, however was good at getting the newspaper\, balancing a biscuit on his nose and keeping me warm on the sofa. Could my father help me train Seamus to be a ‘real’ dog? Over the year after my mother died\, he and I (and dog) took to the muddy fields every Wednesday morning. I learned the finer points of being in command\, something I wasn’t really keen on\, and underneath my father’s gruff and rough outer layer\, was a soft and chewy center. \n

SUMMARY:Lighthouses of Lake Winnebago
DESCRIPTION:When the average person thinks of a lighthouse\, their mind naturally wanders off to the many coastal areas around the world where mighty beacons were erected to help sailing ships avoid the treacherous temperament and underwater landscape of the world’s oceans. In the Midwest\, many think of the old lighthouses perched upon cliffs and along the shores of the Great Lakes\, where many ships have met their fate at the hands of the cold and deep abyss of 21% of the fresh water on earth. Few people realize the existence\, or history\, of the lesser lighthouses around the country including Lake Winnebago. \n

SUMMARY:One hundred years of public broadcasting in the state that invented it.
DESCRIPTION:Peek behind the microphones of Wisconsin Public Radio in this history of public broadcasting. This talk deftly maps public broadcasting’s 100-year journey\, begun in 1917\, by charting the adventures of the Wisconsin broadcasters who invented public broadcasting in the state and gave it to the nation.. \nJack Mitchell\, who developed National Public Radio’s All Things Considered before becoming the head of Wisconsin Public Radio\, centers public broadcasting’s history around the “Wisconsin Idea” that drove its development and still sets its course. Along the way\, Mitchell will introduce the personalities and philosophies\, funding challenges and legislation\, and original programming and pioneering technology that gave us public broadcasting.

SUMMARY:Every Day We Live Is the Future & the Craft of Narrative Nonfiction
DESCRIPTION:This event will feature a reading and images from Every Day We Live Is the Future\, a new book of narrative nonfiction by Wisconsin author Douglas Haynes. Short videos of the book’s protagonists will also be presented. This book recounts two Nicaraguan migrant families’ quests to survive in Managua\, one of the world’s most disaster-prone cities. Their struggles and resilience reveal the need to address a major global challenge: by 2050\, almost one-third of all people will likely live in slums\, vulnerable to disasters caused by the convergence of climate change and rapid urbanization. Author Bill McKibben says this book is “a vivid and gritty account of life in the kind of urban shantytown where a huge percentage of humanity lives out a lifetime . . . A crucial read.” \nIn addition to reading from his book\, Haynes will discuss key research and writing issues he encountered producing it. These issues include interviewing\, immersion journalism methods\, and ethical dilemmas. The result will be a behind-the-scenes look into how narrative nonfiction can represent global environmental justice issues in engaging and hopeful ways.

SUMMARY:Ginny Moon – the Djinn in My Bottle
DESCRIPTION:Ginny’s voice came to me in a mysterious way\, one that I’m still trying to comprehend. In this talk we’ll explore the nature of voice\, narration\, and the quiet but calculating moves of the subconscious. \nVoice is a marker for existence. We tend to listen to the people who have the loudest\, most charismatic voices – and we tend to ignore people who are quiet. Ginny Moon is unique in that she has two voices: her inner voice\, and the voice she uses to speak with her family\, friends\, and classmates. Of the two\, her inner voice is far more dynamic. It’s one of those “big” voices\, the kind that entices. In this talk\, I’ll explain the dual aspects of Ginny’s voice\, as well as how it came to be\, and how it serves as a vehicle for my own personal beliefs.

SUMMARY:Bataan-Corregidor POWs: What happened to them after they were surrendered?
DESCRIPTION:Brothers from Bataan and Operation Plum talk about the early WW II fighter in the Philippines and western Pacific. Without adequate fighting power\, over 10\,000 military personnel spent 3 ½ years as POWs in the Philippines and Japan. Because they were part of the early losing battles\, they were not accorded the heroes’ welcome home after the war. Many spent decades not talking about the atrocities suffered at the hands of their Japanese captors.

SUMMARY:Turn Your Passion Into A Picture Book – The Magic of Monarchs
DESCRIPTION:In summer through late fall\, milkweed grows lush along the sides of the road. Milkweed is the only plant on which monarchs lay their eggs—and the only plant monarch caterpillars eat! \nOne day\, while walking with her dogs\, Linda Vander Heyden discovered all the milkweed along her road had been mowed and lay drying in the sun. Monarch caterpillars clung to the wilted plants. How would they survive? She began gathering caterpillars as people walked past. On that day\, she doubt she saved many. But she wanted to tell their story. \nMonarch populations have dropped by 90% in the last two decades. Monarchs face many challenges\, and scientists are concerned there may come a time when they no longer exist \nMcGinty’s Monarchs (Sleeping Bear Press\, 2016) will engage and empower children to know they\, too\, can play an important role in the survival of these beautiful butterflies. \nJoin her protagonist\, Mr. McGinty\, and embark on a mission to learn about the lifecycle of monarchs…from eggs\, to caterpillars\, to chrysalises—to butterflies! And the joy of turning your passion into a picture book!

SUMMARY:Writing the Dark and Dangerous World of Small Town Policing
DESCRIPTION:The allure of the city is powerful\, but remember: when a killer comes to small town America\, the body is just as cold and the blood runs just as red. \nNeal is a rabid fan of crime fiction\, especially hard-boiled procedurals. Back in the 70’s he cut his literary teeth on Joe Wambaugh and Elmore Leonard. These days his favorites include Mike Connelly\, Don Winslow and Tami Hoag. All these writers set their tales in big cities like Los Angeles\, New York City and Minneapolis. Understandable because that’s where the action is\, right? But\, most police departments in America are really quite small. In some ways\, small town cops are the heart and soul of American law enforcement. \nSmall town cops are usually homegrown\, patrolling the same streets where they once rode a Schwinn bicycle. They hold a personal connection with the community that can’t be taught in a police academy. These men and women stuck around and now protect and serve their own. \nThe allure of the city is hard to resist\, but when a killer does come to small town America\, the body is just as cold and the blood runs just as red. Neal likes to take his readers on a ride along with a cop from the heartland. The towns may be small\, but the cops can still come off as larger than life.

SUMMARY:Taking Flight: A History of Birds and People in the Heart of America
DESCRIPTION:Edmonds\, a historian and a long-time birder\, will describe how and why people in the nation’s heartland responded to the same birds that we see today. “After reading this book\,” essayist B.J Hollars remarked\, “you’ll never look at birds the same way. You’ll never look at humans the same way\, either.” Edmonds will share stories from his 30 years of research among unpublished manuscripts\, rare books\, archaeological reports\, and historic places. From ancient American Indian shamans to modern conservationists\, our predecessors thought about and acted toward birds differently than we do. The talk will be illustrated with amazing slides of historical artifacts\, entertaining anecdotes\, and strange tales of explorers\, scientists\, voodoo priests\, professional hunters\, and other people who interacted with American birds.

SUMMARY:Crossing the Driftless: Some Upstream Paddling Required
DESCRIPTION:It was Joseph Nicollet’s 1843 topographical map—created when the Upper Midwest had no roads to travel\, just rivers—that led to Lynne Diebel’s book Crossing the Driftless. Nicollet paddled those rivers to map the land. Lynne and her husband Bob had paddled thousands of miles on Midwestern rivers\, but always downstream. What about traveling a river route where they had to paddle upstream at times to get where they wanted to go? Their trip would take them from Faribault\, Minnesota\, where her original family has had a summer home on Cedar Lake since the 1800s\, to their Wisconsin home in Stoughton\, close by the Yahara River\, on the eastern edge of Nicollet’s map. There’s a river route for that\, if you throw in a few portages. The rivers carried them across the Driftless Area\, a land that has always fascinated them\, and traveling by river through the Driftless gave them a new sense of the beauty of this rugged\, never-glaciated landscape. Lynne will introduce you to Nicollet’s map\, to the rivers\, and to her award-winning book\, Crossing the Driftless. She’ll talk about their adventures\, share some pictures\, and encourage you to take your own personal river trip.

SUMMARY:Wisconsin in Watercolor: the Life and Legend of Folk Artist Paul Seifert
DESCRIPTION:In his talk\, author Joe Kapler explores in greater detail the background of folk artist Paul Seifert and how his life experiences in his native Germany and new home in Wisconsin’s Driftless Area influenced his art. Kapler also delves into the several of the farm scenes by providing additional information about the people who lived on these farms\, the bygone farming methods depicted\, and what became of the farms and families. Lastly\, Kapler describes the 15-year quest of tracking down Seifert’s story and paintings in hard to reach places\, which required playing the role of skeptical detective or optimistic advocate all the while attempting to balance those perspectives as an historian.

SUMMARY:A History of Beer and Brewing in Neenah and Menasha

From the cities first breweries of the 1850s to the craft breweries of today\, this is a story filled with surprising turns and has\, at times\, been marked by conflict.
