Crafting a Feminist Thriller
October 12, 2020 @ 4:00 pm - 5:00 pm CDT
“Bartz has been widely hailed as a master of the ‘feminist thriller,’” declared the Los Angeles Times, “and both The Herd and her 2019 debut novel, The Lost Night, are deftly constructed page-turners starring flawed female protagonists whose successes are stymied by sexism—implicit, explicit and systemic.” Psychological thrillers often center on a primary romantic relationship—the lonely widow, bitter mom, jealous ex, or wife whose perfect-looking marriage isn’t what it seems. But Bartz’s novels focus on the equally complex and fraught dynamics of close female friendships, examining the codependent closeness of those postgrad years in The Lost Night (a murder mystery set in the warehouse parties of circa-2009 hipster Brooklyn) and the competition and internalized misogyny among high-achieving career women in The Herd (a modern thriller in an exclusive, all-female coworking space in Manhattan). Bartz will discuss her writing process, her journey to publication, the themes her work explores, and more in a presentation and Q&A.
