My Journey From Fire Captain To Award Winning Author

Beneath the Flames is based on my twenty-eight-year career as a Milwaukee firefighter. I’ll share some of the most dramatic stories that inspired me to spend ten years writing it. After deciding I had to write this story, I realized I needed to learn the craft of creative writing if I was to do justice to this important story of race in the inner-city of Milwaukee. It was a long journey of creative writing classes, workshops, conferences, and revision after revision. The message in this talk for other writers is “If I can do it, so can you.” Writing the novel was only the beginning. Once the manuscript was polished and ready for prime time, the challenge was getting the book out in the world. I spent close to a year querying agents and publishers. Once I signed with a publisher, I entered the world of marketing. I had to go from author to business person. What a wake-up call. This became my full-time job. It’s been a wonderful journey and I enjoy sharing the experience in my talks.
